The Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland (TMSA) was set up in 1966 as a membership organisation whose core aim is to present, promote and preserve Scotland’s unique musical traditions through a mix of widespread popular participation and individual artistic excellence. Its branches provide opportunities for local participation by running festivals, ceilidhs, concerts, competitions, radio programmes and workshops. The branches sustain specific cultural traditions of their areas (such as Doric Scots), which are fundamental to the continued authentic voice of professional performers and to the very cultural identity of Scotland itself.
Coming out the pandemic the TMSA’s local and national activities have been making a welcome return – including the Keith, Kirriemuir & Northern Streams festivals. The TMSA has taken over the running of the Highland Music Trust (www.highlandmusictrust.org) to ensure its catalogue of music collections remains available for purchase or free download. We are also working on our annual hard copy traditional music Event Calendar (supported by website listings for release in early 2023); catching up on the postponed TMSA Young Trad Tours of the various BBC Scotland Young Traditional Music of the Year competition winners & finalists; revising our tradmusicmap.scot resource and developing a new national Sessions project amongst other planned initiatives.
