Mogaisean by DLÙ

Respected trad fusion band DLÙ (pronounced dloo) have announced the release of their latest single Mogaisean, hailing the start of a new era for the Glasgow-based five-piece.

Released on Thursday 16 May 2024, Mogaisean is the first single from the band’s upcoming second album Close To which will be launched in June at SWG3 Warehouse in Glasgow.

DLÙ’s energetic single Mogaisean is their take on Òran nam Mogaisean (The Song of the Moccasins) composed by Murdo MacArthur. The revamped traditional Gaelic song has been infused with elements of dance and pop to create a wholly unique sound.

The band believe that this new body of work will captivate both Gaelic speakers and enthusiasts of traditional music, alongside people who are perhaps not regular consumers of Scottish traditional music, thanks to the more modern musical influences on this classic song.

Comprising of Moilidh NicGriogair (fiddle), Zach Ronan (accordion, backing vocals), Aidan Spiers (guitar, backing vocals), Seòras Chlad (bass, backing vocals) and Andrew Grossart (drum kit, percussion), with special guest Joseph McCluskey’s lead vocals on the track, the band’s eclectic musical backgrounds influence their original melodies and arrangements.

DLÙ released their debut album Moch in February 2022 which has been widely recognised with international radio plays, nominations and reviews. Recognising that Moch was marked by experimentation, DLÙ have been honing their new musical direction over the past year having sought the advice of producer Pete Fletcher who recommended taking inspiration from the structure within dance music tracks. Taking this onboard, the band also drafted the inimitable Duncan Lyall who incorporates synths, creating more cohesion within the tracks.

Zach Ronan of DLÙ said: “I first heard Òran nam Mogaisean at the Glasgow Fèis from Joy Dunlop when I was just a wee lad and I loved it! It really left a lasting impression as it is an absolute earworm and it was in my head for weeks. As soon as I suggested it to the band, we were all sold, knowing there was ample room for creativity and the opportunity to put an exciting and fresh modern influence on it. It went through a series of transformations before settling into the version we ultimately recorded. For us, Pete’s production finesse and Duncan’s synth wizardry were the magic ingredients that pulled it all together.”

Mogaisean was recorded between Black Bay Studio on the Isle of Lewis and GloWorm Recording Studioin Glasgow.

The single will be available to stream and download from Thursday 16 May 2024.
