The challenges facing women musicians in the music industry have been discussed for many years. Research has consistently identified gender marginalisation and misogyny as significant barriers affecting women’s participation across different musical genres.
However, until now, there has been limited research specifically addressing sexual violence and harassment within the Scottish folk music scene. This important new study gathers the views and experiences of women musicians working and participating in Scottish folk music, developing better understanding and awareness about the nature and extent of sexual violence and harassment they encounter.
Building on existing work already underway in our community, we hope this research will support community-wide efforts to recognise, address and improve the challenges facing women folk musicians.
The research has been funded through Glasgow University’s Sociological and Cultural Studies Divisional Research seed-corn fund.
