Band Name:The Way North

Band information:

The Way North are a 4-piece band based in Glasgow and Speyside. First formed through UHI's BA applied music end of year residency in Stornoway to perform for the showcase concert. We have since started a session in the Fonn mor, part of the Oran mor in Glasgow and had our very first gig in Arnisdale in the highlands in May. Comprised of 4 multi talented musicians, Gregor Niven, Jamie Clarke, Daisy McCormick, and Fraser MacDonald, combining a vast range of influences to create a unique and energetic sound. Gregor Niven is a Glasgow based accordionist, who is currently a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2026, started playing when he was seven, being a part of both RCS juniors and Douglas Academy Music School and later the fèis movement, combines traditional influences with contemporary elements spanning Scotland, England, and continental European folk traditions to create a rich sound. Hailing from Ross-shire, Jamie Clarke is a Glasgow based fiddle player who combines his traditional highland fiddle upbringing with Irish and Manx techniques, developed through being a devout regular of the session scene in Glasgow, to create a very energetic sound. Daisy McCormick is a fiddle player from the village of Pathhead, just south of Edinburgh, with a very rich music scene which is reflected in her playing. Moving to South Uist at the age of 18, she continued her growth in the Scottish and Gaelic music tradition of the Outer Hebrides, now living in Glasgow, bridging the East and West coast styles. Fraser MacDonald is a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist from Speyside, with 12 years of experience in grunge and rock music, his transition to more trad styles brings his own unique spin on accompaniment, with his experience and skill in other genres shining through. Together we combine our diverse musical background not only in the Scottish traditions but rock, Irish, and some of the most modern contemporary music in the trad world together to create a blend that is authentic to our roots in this genre. This will be an amazing opportunity to make a statement as a band, and showcase different musicians coming together to create something unique.
