Battle of the Folk Bands 2016

← Go back

Band Name:Nae Frontiers!

Band information:

"Nae Frontiers" was formed in response to the BOTFB challenge.

Although Magnus Turpie played in the final of the competition in 2024, with Magnus Turpie Combo, another band won.

Considering the feedback on that performance, 'Nae Frontiers!' has come back with a new line-up, and repertoire of instrumentals and songs from mainly Scottish traditional and 'world music' repertoire, some of which feature vocals from Dominic Blaikie.

The band lineup needs to be flexible to suit members' availability and audience appetites. So, with Magnus in both accompaniment roles, on the Hi-Hat/Snare combo and lead accordion, the instrumental mix of the band on the recordings attached comprises :
Dominic Blaikie: Vocals, Guitar, Fiddle
Magnus Turpie: Accordion, Percussion (Hi-hat & Snare)
Linda Campbell: second Accordion/vocals /(clarsach -rowan tree set)
Beatrice Blanco: piano
Siannie Moodie: Clarsach (Dargai set)

In the event that this band is selected, another fiddler and harpist may play with the band at the Celtic Connections gig.

This year has seen Magnus Turpie working on the 'pathways' programmes for both Live Music Now Scotland and Feis Rois, both of which organisations have recognised the under-representation of people with additional support needs in their programmes.

He is also a composer, actor and all-round entertainer, deploying his musical skills on stage with "Cutting Edge" & "Lung Ha" theatre companies and with Drake Music Scotland.

Finally, as you know, should you decide to favour this new band in your selection, you will once more be supporting an artist with Down's Syndrome, (Magnus Turpie) who, because of his condition continues to face considerable challenges in integration within the mainstream Traditional Music-making arena.

By doing this small thing, you can diversify your project's output and demonstrate that our 'trad' music community is, as is claimed, inclusive and open to all.

In any event, thank you for this opportunity to submit. I hope you enjoy the recordings.
