Band Name:The Jack Houston Band
The Jack Houston Band is based in Glasgow and is formed of Jack Houston, Megan MacDonald, Galen Brook, Nicky Kirk & Eòghainn Beaton.
Jack Houston is a fiddler, composer, and Irish speaker from Inishowen, County Donegal. His musical style is rooted in the fiddle music of Donegal. Jack is an active member in the traditional music scenes of both Donegal and Scotland; and he has embraced the musical, cultural, and linguistic connections between the two places. His debut album ÓMÓS has gained critical acclaim at home and abroad. Jack and his band have played his music at hugely successful album launches in both Donegal and Glasgow; followed by featured performances at Letterkenny Trad Week 2024; 'LUSH' 2024'; and recently the Seamus Grant Festival 2024 – where Jack was the featured fiddle player alongside headline act Blazin’ Fiddles. Jack was featured in the 'Archive 23' collection by the Inishowen Traditional Music Project in 2023. He was featured as a fiddler and the voice of Navvy Poet, Patrick MacGill, on Gráinne Brady’s albums ‘Newcomer’, and ‘The Road Across the Hills’.
Megan MacDonald is an accordionist from the North Highlands of Scotland. Her dynamic and energetic playing has seen her in demand as a band member, tutor and session musician across the traditional music scene in Scotland. She can be seen with folk bands EABHAL and HEISK who have both picked up numerous nominations at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards since their launch in 2018. She has played with many singers on the forefront of Scotland’s music scene, such as Josie Duncan, Eddi Reader and Siobhan Miller.
Galen Brook is a mandolin and banjo player from the isolated peninsula of Knoydart on the West Coast of Scotland. His energetic playing is influenced by the traditional music of Ireland and his home in the West Highlands as well as contemporary Trad-Fusion and Bluegrass music from both sides of the Atlantic. He is a staple figure on the session and cèilidh scenes of both Lochaber and Glasgow.
Nicky Kirk is a guitarist and composer with a background steeped in the music of Ireland, Scotland and his native region of Northumberland. Nicky works in a wide range of musical genres, from Dub-Reggae to Cumbia and Chicha. He draws from many musical influences encountered on travels through India, North Africa and Spain. He plays with Gaelic folk band EABHAL, as well as Dub/Trad pioneers AN DANNSA DUB, and more recently performing with Argentinian producer Maxi Roots.
Eòghainn Beaton is a bodhrán player, piper, and Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye. He is a recent graduate of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Musically, his roots lie in the West coast piping tradition, and he also draws influence from the modern traditional music scene. Eòghainn is a member of the exciting new group FALASGAIR. He has recently played bodhrán for folk musician Eva Holbrook (Lady Moon), and has toured with Irish dance show ‘Rhythm of the Dance’.
