Band Name:Serena Smith & Friends

Band information:

We are a lively celtic fusion band with fresh musical arrangements which combine traditional fiddle tunes with rock, jazz, dance, and other styles. Our music is influenced by Elephant Sessions, Eileen Ivers, Talisk, Beoga, Blackbeard's Tea Party, and Face the West. We have decades of experience in multiple genres but love the traditional tunes, particularly Scottish fiddle tunes. Serena often travels to go to different sessions just to learn more tunes, for example in Edinburgh.

We are completely instrumental (Serena Smith - fiddle, Joss Ward - guitar, Crauford Thomson - bass. and Mark McLaughlan - drums), and play music you can dance to with some interesting stories to share along the way!

As is required, two of our members are Scottish, Crauford Thomson (our bass player who was born and raised in Glasgow) and Mark McLaughlan (our drummer who also plays the Scottish bagpipes). Serena is mixed race and did an ancestry DNA test and happens to be a bit Scottish as well!

In 2020 Serena won the Gordon Duncan award which provided funding during covid 19 to musicians who could play his tunes. Serena was sponsored by Arts Council England last year to form the band. Although we're based in the Midlands we love to travel... we recently headlined a folk festival in the Czech Republic. We'd absolutely love to be able to play at Celtic Connections it's a dream of ours and hope to get there some day.

The recordings I've attached are from our first album which is upcoming (apologies if you have duplicate files... realised the first ones we uploaded were too large so we compressed them and re-uploaded). We do have more Scottish tunes in our set like Arran boat song and Atholl Highlanders, but we play them very traditionally and we wanted to show you something a bit different. We are also working on more upbeat tracks which will be ready soon.

Thank you very much for the opportunity.
