Trad Music Spotlight: SKERRYVORE

Hands Up for Trad’s Trad Music Spotlight is a monthly feature on a band or solo artist. It was first launched in February 2015 and features musicians who are working in the trad scene – both in Scotland and around the world. We asked SKERRYVORE a few questions.

What’s happening?
This is our 10th year as a band and we have just had our own special birthday ‘party’ by hosting the biggest gig of our lives – an open-air concert at Mossfield Park, Oban to over 5000 people!

skerryvore-auchenstoshan-jul14-010-1When was the band formed?
Skerryvore was formed in 2005 after a few years of the original 4 members (Martin, Alec, Fraser & myself) taking on small gigs and sessions around the west coast of Scotland. What was meant to be a summer of tunes and good craic has then snowballed into a full-time career and playing music in over 25 countries worldwide!

What excites you about performing Scottish music?
Fusing Scottish traditional music with other styles is a huge part of what Skerryvore do and any new song/arrangement that works well is always very exciting. Getting to travel the world performing to different people and cultures is also a fantastic part of being involved in the scottish music scene.

What’s next for you?
We head off on a world tour for the rest of our Decade year that will take in shows and festivals in over 10 different countries including the USA, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy and our first visit to Slovenia!
