Trad Music Spotlight: Dallahan

Hands Up for Trad’s Trad Music Spotlight is a monthly feature on a band or solo artist. It was first launched in February 2015 and features musicians who are working in the trad scene – both in Scotland and around the world. We asked Dallahan a few questions.

What’s happening?
We are currently promoting are second album ‘Matter of Time’. we toured this album for 12 weeks in Denmark, Germany, Nepal and the UK. We had some amazing gigs, one of which was at Frederikshavn Refugee Centre where we played for around 500 refugees, mostly Syrians.

We were invited by the British Council to take part in the Britain-Nepal bicentenary celebrations in Kathmandu where we collaborated with traditional Nepalese band ‘Kutumba’. This was an amazing experience for all of us, we met some amazing people and brought back some great Nepalese tunes. We even played for Prince Harry at the British Embassy!

imageWhen was the band formed?
The band started in 2013 . We launched our EP in Edinburgh in December that year and released our debut album ‘When the Day is on the Turn’ in August 2014.

What excites you about performing Scottish music?
Initially we only came together through a mutual love of Irish and Scottish music. But, we quickly found that we thrive on bringing in other styles to our music such as Jazz, Funk, Pop, Classical and Balkan music. It’s great to be able to perform the music that we love in such a buzzing scene that’s rife with talent,

What’s next for you?
We have a busy summer ahead, kicking off with Sark Folk Festival in the Channel Islands. Next are Priddy Folk Festival, Stonehaven Folk Festival, and Hot Hoolie in Orkney. After that we will head to the U.S for a month of festivals and concerts in New York, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Wisconson and Pennsylvania.

Right now we are all away on our respective holidays enjoying wee break!
