Trad Music Spotlight: Barluath

Hands Up for Trad’s Trad Music Spotlight is a monthly feature on a band or solo artist. It was first launched in February 2015 and features musicians who are working in the trad scene – both in Scotland and around the world. We asked Barluath a few questions.

What’s happening?
We’ve just completed our fourth successful tour of Germany and this year we’re looking forward to performing at the Edinburgh Fringe and headlining the Linlithgow Folk Festival. Last year we were delighted to be nominated in the Folk Band of the Year category at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

When was the band formed?
Barluath was formed in 2011 by students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Scottish Music course. What started as a one-off gig for a local Burns Supper led on to much bigger things and we’re still going strong six years later!

What excites you about performing Scottish music?
We love introducing Scottish music to new audiences around the world as well as playing to fans closer to home. We’re very passionate about performing both traditional and contemporary folk music and we love mixing the old with the new as well as writing our own tunes and songs. We’re enjoying being a part of the resurgence and promotion of Gaelic language and traditional Scottish step-dance.

What’s next for you?
Next year we’re looking forward to performing at even more festivals and taking our music to an even wider audience. We’re also planning a spring tour of Denmark and Germany and we’ve got plans underway to record a long-awaited follow up to our first two albums!
