Street Performance for May Day: Musicians & Mummers
Weds 3, 10, 17, 24 Apr, 1 May | 6.30pm – 8.30pm | Free | Music & Drama
The Edinburgh May Day parade is less about massed Labour movements than it was, developing as a new force for bringing together progressive organisations – political, social & cultural – in the seasonal calendar of renewal and regeneration.
Everyone is warmly invited to join the TRACS band of Mummers as part of the parade for dressing up, music and folk drama.
The Marching Band lead the way with loud acoustic instruments, drummers and percussionists, brass, whistles and accordions, with Guisers decked out in floral garlands.
Arrangements for the procession are more funky than ponderous and all abilities are welcome to get involved in the community, with the rehearsals an opportunity for informal jams and discussion.
There are well-known marches like Freedom Come All Ye, John MacLean March, Loch Lomond, Banks of Sicily, and Stan Reeves also has some simple Basque, Breton, Portuguese and other European tunes to develop an International flavour.
On the day (Sat 4 May), gather at Johnstone Terrace at 11.30am for 12pm March.
To get ahead with the music, Email Stan or just come along to the sessions!
