Tinto Summer School 2023: Luc McNally

Tinto Summer School will be happening 3-8th July 2023 in the fabulous Wiston Lodge and we would love to see you there! This is our 23rd year of Tinto and it is always a special time making music and hanging out with (and making new) friends. You can find out more by visiting here.

Every year we have brilliant tutors to teach music and we thought you would like to find out more about them.

Luc McNally

Luc McNally is a skilled guitarist, bouzouki player, and singer based in Glasgow, though originally hailing from County Durham. He started his musical journey with Kathryn Tickell’s Folkestra when he was 14 and fell in love with the mixture of traditional and contemporary arrangements of Northumbrian, Scottish, and Irish music. Since then, he has become a two-time finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician Award and has made a name for himself as an accompanist to traditional Scottish and Irish musicians.

Luc has performed and recorded with a range of talented artists, including Dosca, Snuffbox, Suas, Hannah Rarity, Iona Fyfe, RURA, and Maeve MacKinnon. In March 2020, he released his debut album, ‘Night Off,’ with Graham Rorie, the fiddler and mandolinist from Gnoss.

Luc’s passion for music extends beyond his own performances, as he hosts 3-5 sessions per week in Glasgow and attends others whenever he can. He considers these sessions to be the coalface for new tunes and songs, where the ones that people don’t get sick of stick around and become part of the tradition. In addition to the traditional music scene, Glasgow boasts a thriving jazz scene, which Luc finds fascinating even though he has no formal education or ability with that discipline.

There is a warmth to Luc’s singing as well as his playing, and his love for traditional music is infectious. He credits his mom with introducing him to the genre and setting him on this path, and he’s grateful to be living in a place with such a high concentration of amazing musicians and bands, where he can continue to learn and grow as a musician.
