Strathspey And Surreal Society Returns To Celtic Connections

On Saturday 4th February Aidan O’Rourke, Mhairi Mackinnon, Chris Stout and Simon Thoumire have written new music for Aidan and Simon’s project Strathspey and Surreal Society. The orchestra debuted at last years Celtic Connections with 21 fiddlers. This year 2 accordions, piano and double bass have been added to make an orchestra of 25 and again write new music for strathspey and reel society form. The ‘society’ consists of many of Scotland’s top fiddlers and will be conducted by Dave Milligan. You can buy tickets for the concert in the Fruitmarket (starts at 8pm) here.

The amazing array of fiddlers are Ryan Young, Chris Stout, Lori Watson, Laura Wilkie, Aidan O’Rourke, Shona Mooney, Patsy Reid, Sally Simpson, Rona Wilkie, Daniel Thorpe, Mhairi Mackinnon, Graham Mackenzie and from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; Bernadette Kellermann, Graham Rorie, Robbie MacKenzie, Madelaine Stewart, Katie Allen, Chloe Bryce, Alison Ewan, Meredith Hudock, Isla Callister-Wafer. Also performing are Tom Orr and Ryan Corbett (accordion), Dave Milligan (piano).

The concert is being videoed and recorded and will be made available on YouTube in due course. The scores will be uploaded to Hands Up for Trad’s MusicHub where they can be downloaded and performed.

Thanks to Creative Scotland and Celtic Connections for funding the project.
