A new scheme to support four young players of Scottish traditional instruments was launched this year by The Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh. The scheme is being paid for by members and is designed to encourage, support and develop traditional Scottish music.
The young musicians’ Inaugural Concert is being held at the Club on Tuesday 4th October 2016, and is open to all lovers of traditional Scottish music.
Each of the chosen pupils, aged 12 – 16, are extremely talented musicians and their instruments are the fiddle, clarsach, accordion and bagpipes. The youngsters will receive sponsorship for three years, as well as tuition from mentors – professionals who are performers, composers and recording artists in their own right.
The mentors are Paul Anderson for the fiddle, Alison Kinnaird for the clarsach, Senior Pipe Major of the British Army Martin Macdonald for the pipes, Sandy Brechin for accordion and Robin Morton for performance skills.
Scotland’s best known composer and conductor Sir James MacMillan and his wife, Lynne, are Principal Mentors and are backing the scheme thanks to their particular interest in encouraging young musicians.
The young fiddler is 12 years old Lucy Ruuskanen, a pupil of Broughton High School. The chosen clarsach player is 15 years old Ciorstaidh Chaimbeul (Kirsty Campbell) who comes from An Caol, near Fort William and is studying at Edinburgh’s St Mary’s Music School.
16 years old Ryan Corbett is the chosen accordion player, and he is currently studying in Douglas Academy and the Junior Conservatoire of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
And the Club young musician on bagpipes is 13 years old Angus McGregor who plays in three pipe bands, including Merchiston Castle School, where he holds an exhibition scholarship for piping.
This will be an excellent concert to support and the club is hoping for a good attendance. These young musicians are a joy to hear and their performances are outstanding.
Without doubt, they will be the future stars of the traditional music scene in Scotland.
Tickets are available from the club in advance, £18.00 and £15.00 concessions.
