“When the opportunity arose to spend a few days learning smallpipes with renowned tutors in an extraordinary part of the country, I jumped at it. I loved it so much I went back this year and if I’m lucky I’ll get a place for next. What was so wonderful was being surrounded by people who were all there for the same reason, in a place of astounding beauty and with hospitality that you’d struggle to get in a top class establishment.

We played music, we made friendships, we ate and drank probably far too much and too well. We played daft games and laughed until it hurt, and if we wanted peace we walked off to the beach or the moors. We played in the pub and we played in a cave and we played in the garden, by ourselves and with others, fiddlers and pipers all.

The special thing about the Far North Retreats is not just the place and the people, it’s the quality of the music and the teaching. Being so close to such wonderful world class musicians and learning in small groups is a very special experience. I loved it all. I will be there next year and the next!”
