We’re excited to announce that Distil is expanding! Our flagship residential programme has been helping professional traditional musicians develop their composition and improvisation skills since 2002, and now we’re adding three new ways to connect, learn, and experiment.
What’s New in the Distil Family
Distil Meet-Up Series
Three intimate workshops throughout the year, each led by a different expert practitioner. These free 2-hour sessions at the Scottish Music Centre focus on composition and improvisation, combining presentations with plenty of time for questions and informal chat. Perfect for both Distil alumni and anyone curious about contemporary approaches to traditional music.

Distil Rehearsal Room
Our new Rehearsal Room gives Distil alumni (musicians that have attended Distil Residential) the chance to hear their 2-minute pieces performed by Mr McFall’s Chamber, with expert feedback to help develop their work further. It’s like a script workshop for composers – a safe space to test ideas and get constructive input.
Distil Beta Sessions
Sometimes you need a space to try things out without the pressure of perfection. Our new Beta Sessions are all about experimentation – bring your rough ideas, test new sounds, or collaborate spontaneously with other musicians. Think of it as a creative playground where works-in-progress are celebrated. We will announce soon how to apply to be part of this.

We know professional musicians don’t stop learning after one course. You need ongoing opportunities to develop your skills, test new ideas, and connect with other creative people. These new programmes give you different ways to engage – whether you want expert feedback, informal learning, or simply space to experiment.
