Standing Together for Safe Spaces in Traditional Music

Hands Up for Trad is committed to fostering a safe, respectful environment within the traditional music community. We firmly support the Musicians’ Union Safe Space scheme, which addresses sexual harassment and abuse of power in our industry.

Recent research by the Musicians’ Union revealed that 48% of musicians have experienced sexual harassment at work, with 85% of these cases going unreported. These statistics are unacceptable, and we stand with the MU in working to create positive change in our industry.

We believe that everyone deserves to feel safe while performing, teaching, learning, or enjoying traditional music. Whether you’re a professional musician, student, teacher, or enthusiast, your right to a safe environment is paramount.

If you’ve experienced or witnessed harassment:

  • Report anonymously through the MU’s Safe Space reporting tool
  • Email safespace@theMU.org
  • Contact your regional MU office

The MU treats all reports with strict confidentiality, and no action will be taken without your consent. Their Safe Space scheme offers:

  • Confidential advice on your rights
  • Information about support services
  • Guidance on addressing inappropriate behavior
  • Support for MU members in raising formal complaints

Together, we can create a more secure and supportive traditional music community.
