My thoughts on sustaining a career in traditional music

career-opportunitiesI was asked to contribute to the “Sustaining a career in traditional music” panel at the Traditional Music Forum’s TradTalk at the weekend and I decided to write down my thoughts on the subject. By the time I arrived at the workshop the panel had changed name to “Sustaining a life in traditional music” and maybe this fits better. If you have any comments on this please get in touch 🙂

Don’t stop learning
Don’t be frightened to try new things
Don’t stop practicing
Don’t stop loving what you do
Don’t wait for the telephone to ring

Continue learning as much as you can
Try new things
Tell people about them
Practise as much as you can
Love what you do – you need to
Live a creative life

Don’t play music for a living. Play music because you love it.
