Moniack Mhor Songwriting Retreat by Claire Hastings

Moniack-Mhor-700x400I am just back from a lovely week at Moniack Mhor, Scotland’s creative writing retreat in the Highlands. I was on a songwriting course with 13 others, with tuition from Findlay Napier and Karine Polwart. I’m a fan of them both and admire their songwriting, so was interested to learn about the way they write. They demonstrated different techniques of songwriting and methods to spark ideas for songs, and at the end of the week we recorded what we had written. I struggle to find the time to write new songs, so this week was perfect! Free from distraction and in the bonnie Scottish countryside, which certainly helped with the creativity. I intend to put one or two of the songs written this week on the upcoming album. (Watch this space!)

I was thrilled to be asked to perform again with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at BBC Proms in the Park, Glasgow Green. It was an amazing experience, but very daunting. I can definitely say 8000 is the biggest audience I’ve performed to! It was great meeting the other performers, including Alexandra Burke who did a stunning performance.

This week I’m looking forward to a gig down on home turf with Jenn Butterworth at the Haugh of Urr church on the 29th at 7.30pm. Next weekend will be the semi-finals of the Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award, so I’m planning to join in the fun. With less stress this time! I can’t believe it has been a year already!
