Acclaimed contemporary Scottish folk band Breabach are set to perform as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer, with three shows lined up at the city’s Summerhall on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd August 2023.
The shows, presented by Nothing Ever Happens Here and Made in Scotland, follow on from a sell-out performance at The Queen’s Hall last autumn, and the band’s first time performing in Edinburgh since being named Folk Band of the Year at the 2022 Scots Trad Music Awards.
Breabach will be joined by some of their favourite contemporary Scottish musicians for this special run of shows, performing tracks from their latest album Fàs, as well as a selection from their back catalogue.
On Tuesday 22nd August, Breabach will be joined by talented singer-songwriter and keyboard player Beth Malcolm for a standing show, with dancing encouraged. Originally from Perth, Beth’s music is folk-inspired, and she sings a mix of traditional, modern and self-penned Scots songs. She was named BBC MG ALBA Scots Singer of the Year in 2023.
Wednesday 23rd August will see the band performing two shows, with a solo seated concert at 6pm, and a standing gig at 8pm with special guest Inge Thomson. An acclaimed singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, Inge is a founding member of legendary Scottish folk band Harem Scarem. She has released two solo albums as well as numerous collaborative projects, and works closely with celebrated singer-songwriter Karine Polwart, playing accordion and percussion in her band.
James Lindsay of Breabach said: “We can’t wait to perform as part of Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year, joined by the wonderful Beth and Inge. Edinburgh crowds are always fantastic but during the Fringe the whole city really comes to life and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. Whether you’re up for a dance or would prefer a seated concert, we hope you’ll join us this August!
“Summerhall is an amazing venue, running an exciting and diverse program of arts events, and we’re delighted to have been selected for their ‘Nothing Ever Happens Here’ fringe program this year.”
Breabach are Megan Henderson (fiddle/vocals), James Lindsay (double bass/moog/vocals), Calum MacCrimmon(Highland bagpipe/whistle/bouzouki/vocals), Conal McDonagh (Highland bagpipe/uilleann pipes/whistle/vocals) and Ewan Robertson (guitar/cajon/vocals).
Over the course of 18 years, Breabach have performed all over the world, from the Sydney Opera House to Central Park in New York. They have racked up an impressive array of accolades including six Scots Trad Music Awards, and nominations for Best Group at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, European Album of the Year at the Songlines Music Awards, and the Quarterly Critic’s Choice Award at the German Record Critic’s Award 2023.
