BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2014 winner Robyn Stapleton from Stranraer, raised the roof of City Halls this evening, with a performance which took the 25 year old from a passionate hobby to a promising career in music.
This year’s final saw six talented young musicians battle it out in front of a panel of judges and over 400 members of the audience, for the top spot in what has become one of the most prestigious annual awards for Scottish traditional music.
The accolade has won Robyn a recording session with BBC Radio Scotland, a performance at the Scots Trad Music Awards and one year’s membership of the Musician’s Union.
Delighted with the award, Robyn said, ”It’s been a great experience – I’m sorry the competition is over, but am looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”
Jeff Zycinski, Head of Radio for BBC Scotland, listened to all six performances which make up BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year programme broadcast this evening. He was once again inspired by the talent this award attracts.
“We broadcast the final concert for this event because every year, the musical skills and the comprehensive content of the participants is incredible – and we are keen that the nation shares this talent.
“All six finalists have done a superb job to get this far bearing in mind the huge number of entries and shortlisting that we have filtered through to date. Robyn has shown the traditional skills, the young, vibrant talent and that extra wow factor that clinched the title. We wish her a well deserved and prosperous musical future ahead.”
