The Queen of Argyll was always a hugely popular live song for Silly Wizard, one of Scotland’s all-time most influential folk bands. This version was recorded in front of a sell out crowd in Cambridge, Massachusetts during the band’s 1983 North American tour. The recording was originally released as 2 LPs. A repackaged and re-mastered version was released on CD in 2012 as “Live Again”
Silly Wizard was a Scottish folk band that began forming in Edinburgh in 1970. The founder members were two like-minded university students—Gordon Jones (guitar, bodhran, vocals, bouzouki, mandola) and Bob Thomas (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, concertina). The as-yet-unnamed band was sometimes joined by thirteen-year-old schoolboy Johnny Cunningham (fiddle, viola, mandola, vocals), who began more extensive touring with the band in 1972. Phil Cunningham joined and the rest was history.
