Out on the Roof is the brand new collaborative single from harp and fiddle duo Rebecca Hill and Charlie Stewart, set for release on Friday 24th March. Written during a significant period of change in Charlie’s life, the emotive track is one of bittersweet reflection and nostalgia.
With Rebecca on lever harp and Charlie on fiddle and octave fiddle, the elegant melodies of the instrumental record are both uplifting and poignant. Out of the Roof demonstrates the pair’s subtle yet undeniable musical skill, and will undoubtedly leave listeners reminiscing on their own significant life moments.
Originally from Connel on the West Coast, Rebecca met Perthshire native Charlie at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2013, and the pair have been playing together informally for the past decade.
Now based in Glasgow, the duo are combining their wealth of musical experience to explore the concept of improvisation in bold and contemporary arrangements, inspired by the thriving traditional music scene in Glasgow, as well as their own personal and musical experiences.
Out on the Roof is the first single to come from a bank of new material from Rebecca and Charlie, with the duo set to release their debut album later this spring.
Charlie Stewart said: “I wrote this tune while looking back over a chapter of my life which was coming to an end. I was packing up my bedroom in my old flat, getting ready to move, and I began writing the melody while contemplating all the happy times I had there. I used to sit and watch birds gather on the roof of the opposite building, and I developed a real fondness for the view and the area. The track is all about memories, and the simple moments in life which often bring us the most joy.”
Rebecca Hill said: “Producing this single with Charlie was a fantastic musical experience. We recorded the harp and main fiddle parts together in order for the track to sound more like a live performance, and added the extra strings afterwards. I hope the gentle melodies allow listeners to take a pause and reflect on their lives or on a particular memory, as that is what this music is all about.”
Before embarking on this collaborative journey, both Rebecca and Charlie have enjoyed successful solo careers. Rebecca reached the final of the Princess Margaret of the Isles senior clársach competition in 2019, and released her debut EP The Airing at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections in January 2020. The West Coast native was also voted Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards that same year.
An undeniable talent on the traditional music scene, Charlie has worked on recordings with over 30 artists to date, performing regularly with a variety of notable musicians including Siobhan Miller, Matt Carmichael and Mischa MacPherson. He is a founding member of the bands Naad-Hara, Dosca and Snuffbox, and was voted BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017.
Out on the Roof was recorded at Gorbal Sounds in Glasgow and mixed by Euan Burton at GloWormRecording Studio.
Out on the Roof will be available to download and stream on all major platforms on Friday 24th March 2023.
