Step Into The Light is the debut EP from Americana/Folk duo Mist & Wing. Their first release blends Scottish indie-folk with hints of country: “If you mixed Angus & Julia Stone with The Jayhawks and The Chicks, this is what you’d get.” Alan & Grace Murray (graduates of UHI Applied Music & the Royal College Of Music) make up the band, whose moniker takes inspiration from the Gaelic names for the Isle of Skye.
Hailing from Skye and growing up with a stammer, Alan found music to be a way of connecting with others that, for him, was easier than speaking. This makes sense of his conversational songs, with catchy choruses that invite you to sing along. Add in Grace’s smooth, engaging voice and you have a sound that combines the arresting synchronicity of The Civil Wars, the gentle melancholy of Jackson Browne and the lyrical wit of Jason Isbell.
‘Duntulm’, the final track on the EP, is a fiddle tune written by Alan about an area on Skye that’s close to his heart. Duntulm is almost as far north on the island as you can go, and is a beautiful spot full of history, with wide views over the sea to Harris and Lewis. It’s near to where Alan grew up, and is his favourite place for looking at the stars. The track includes a guest feature by Skye-based musician Calum Munro (Meantime) on accordion, recorded remotely by Micah Gilbert in Uig on Skye.
The duo’s first EP highlights the range in their self-penned material; four songs and an instrumental piece. The songs showcase Alan’s skill as a keen observer and engaging storyteller. Driving lead single ‘Country Mile’ tells a tale of wanting to escape the city for the coast, to get away from it all. In the accompanying music video (found on the duo’s Youtube channel, or via their website, mistandwing.com), the couple do exactly this. An idea hatched during lockdown saw them chart a trip from Bridge of Orchy to Bornesketaig in a Triumph Herald, captured by Analog Film Co.
Produced by Jack Henderson (Over The Rhine) and engineered in Leadhills and Penicuik with Mattie Foulds, the record was mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye Mastering.
‘There are no shortage of hooks and memorable lines across all five of the EP’s tracks . . .‘Country Mile’ has all the makings of an instant hit, with a catchy chorus that won’t relent.’ (West Highland Free Press)
Mist & Wing’s remaining live dates for 2022 are at West Barns Village Hall (26th November) and Kilmuir Hall on Skye (3rd December). Tickets and more info can be found on their website, www.mistandwing.com.
