Cooking 6/4 | November 9 by Gráinne Brady & Tina Jordan Rees

GT-EP-frontThis is a set of tunes that Gráinne and Tina put together for their 2013 EP. Both compositions by Tina, this lively set starts with an A minor reel in 6/4 time and goes into a 4/4 reel in D minor.

“It was really exciting working on arranging these two tunes” says Tina. “We started with a chordal riff that I had written on the piano to accompany the 6/4 tune. The set was then built around this featuring both as an intro and also in the middle of the set between the two tunes. Like with many of our sets we wanted the fiddle and piano to switch roles throughout between playing the tune and accompanying it.”

Gráinne Brady and Tina Jordan Rees are a fiddle and piano duo from Cavan and Clitheroe who are based in Glasgow. Gráinne, from Co. Cavan in Ireland, moved to Glasgow to study a Masters in Maths and to pursue her love for music. Tina, from Clitheroe in Lancashire, graduated in 2011 from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with a BA (Hons) in Scottish Music. She was a nominee in the “Up and Coming Artist of the Year” category in the 2013 Scots Trad Music Awards and was a finalist in the 2011 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year award.

The duo first met in the vibrant session scene of Glasgow in 2011. Both have a love for learning, playing and composing tunes and so set up the duo in Autumn 2012. In 2013 the pair recorded an EP comprised solely of their own compositions. They invited guest musician Eamonn Nugent to put down some cracking bodhrán beats on some of the tracks. Eamonn often joins the duo on stage during their live gigs.

“Gráinne Brady’s direct and unpretentious fiddle style is complemented by Tina Jordan Rees’ sparklingly percussive keyboard, accentuating the players’ individuality yet giving off a sisterly air of familiarity that makes for a delightful pairing.” Sean Purser 2013.
