Divergence is a project led by Freya Rae on flute, whistles and clarinet, she is joined by clarsach player Siannie Moodie and Tim Lane on kit, percussion, sansula and the tongue drum.
The trio take Freya’s own traditionally inspired melodies and twist them into sets and riffs using acoustic instruments and electronic effects. Alongside this powerhouse of core musicians there are also two incredible guests on the album; Eryn Rae plays fiddle on Alderbank & Aye Yew and Fraser Fifield plays soprano saxophone on Aye Yew & Beetroot, he also plays low whistle on Owlets.
Divergence is so named because the band seeks to promote the use of non-traditional instruments in traditional music, primarily the silver boehm system flute. Their aim is to encourage inclusivity, progression and acceptance. Other instruments on the album that diverge from the usual traditional line up are the tongue drum, sansula, clarinet and soprano saxophone.
