The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh are the seventeenth recipients of Hands Up for Trad’s Business Limelight Award. The “Limelight’s” are a monthly initiative (launched in October 2012) that recognises the outstanding contributions made by businesses and organisations who contribute, shape and influence the arts and cultural sector in Scotland today. The Queen’s Hall are one of Scotland’s best venues promoting and developing live music from across the world.
We asked Adrian Harris of The Queen’s Hall the following questions.
What is your principle company activity?
The hosting, promotion and development of the finest live music in Edinburgh.
When and where did the company first start trading?
What made you want to work in Scottish culture?
It’s amongst the best in the world. Small country, big creativity.
Can you tell us of any particular company highlights?
Keeping going for 35 years in a city and a sector that has seen many changes that’s caused other venues and promoters to shut up shop. Working with artists and organisations at the start of the careers and watching them develop into internationally recognised success stories. Developing projects like The Martyn Bennett Prize for traditional music composition that encourage and strengthen the depth of talent in Scottish music.
What are your company’s plans for the future?
More of the same (hopefully!). Year-round, we want to see more musicians on our stage and more audiences enjoying them.
Our next big target is finding the matching support to our recent successful funding bid from Historic Scotland for the refurbishment of the Hall. As a Grade A Listed building, The Queen’s Hall has unique requirements and this will guarantee its existence for the next generation.
How will you celebrate receiving Hands Up for Trad’s Business Limelight award?
It’ll either be a modest smile for being recognised as doing a good job for the musicians and audiences or it’ll be like a night out with John Bonham…
