Skye electronic Celtic pioneers Niteworks are to make their final tour documentary Solas na Maidne available online for the first time on 14 May – giving fans across the globe the chance to relive the band’s emotional farewell tour from wherever they are.
It is thought to be the first ever Gàidhlig and English language film with bi-lingual subtitles.
The online release, happening at 6pm on 14 May at www.niteworksband.com, marks the second anniversary of the tour and will be accompanied by the simultaneous digital release of a live album recorded at the same shows.
Advance tickets go on sale from 9am, 11 May.
Innes Strachan of Niteworks, now also releasing music with new band LUSA, said: “We’re really proud of the documentary. Magnus has done an incredible job of capturing the energy of the final tour on stage and behind the scenes – we can’t wait to share it with fans everywhere on the night.”
The online release follows further screenings at Skye Live Festival – at 2pm on Friday 8th and 12pm on Saturday 9th May at the newly refurbished Las Cinema in Portree – giving Skye audiences from their home island another chance to see it ahead of the worldwide online release.
Directed by Magnus Graham – brother of drummer Ruairidh – the documentary follows the band’s sold-out 2024 farewell tour from its opening night at Skye Live in Portree through dates in Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London, with the sold-out O2 Academy Glasgow show as its centrepiece.
Magnus has described it as a passion project he “never ever plans to repeat,” given the number of edits the band insisted upon.
The film is bilingual in English and Gàidhlig, reflecting how the band naturally communicate with one another. In what is believed to be a first for any Gàidhlig language film, both languages are also subtitled throughout – English speech carries Gàidhlig subtitles and Gàidhlig speech carries English ones.
Niteworks announced in 2024 that the Solas na Maidne tour would be their last, citing the pressures of balancing touring and music-making alongside full-time jobs and family commitments.
Just last month, Niteworks issued a rallying call for politicians from all parties standing for election as MSPs at Holyrood tomorrow (7 May) to overhaul how music and Gaelic is supported, urging them to declare the current arts funding crisis a national emergency.
