As part of the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards we have an Album of the Year category (sponsored by Birnam CD). Musicians added their albums from the last 12 months (September 2015 to August 2016) and then in September 2016 we asked our Album panel (20 musicians / industry people) to listen to all the releases and bring it down to 20. You can view all the albums from the period here. Below is our 2016 Scots Trad Album of the Year Shortlist of 10 albums. Click on the links and read about the albums. We have also created a Scots Trad Album of the Year podcast featuring all 20 longlisted albums for you to listen to here.

Any more information you would like to tell us? | Uplifting, fresh, honest and powerful music…created by three fiddles, mandolin and guitar. Expect influences of traditional Scottish and Irish music, Bluegrass, Old-Time, Classical, and new compositions, harmonies, energy, and drive. BURSTING onto the scene back in 2017, Kinnaris Quintet last year wowed audiences with the release of their much anticipated debut album, Free One. It is a fitting title for a band whose love of life is given full expression through their music. Combining Scottish and Irish folk with bluegrass and classical, Kinnaris are five musicians unable to hide their joy at making music together. It’s an enthusiasm that is infectious as anyone who has seen them live will attest. The band have quickly become the folk band to see and have brought their music to venues all of the UK, – including an appearance at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom, Shetland Folk Festival, HebCelt, Skye Live, Priddy, Cambridge, Sidmouth and Orkney Folk festival. Fiona MacAskill (fiddle), Laura Wilkie (fiddle), Aileen (Reid) Gobbi (five-string fiddle), Laura-Beth Salter (mandolin) and Jenn Butterworth (guitar) collectively make Kinnaris Quintet. They are all accomplished musicians in their own right, but when they play together their combined energy is a sight to behold. It is a force to be reckoned with. Free One has been received to high acclaim, not only in the UK, but also across Europe, with America on the horizon. Taster Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuaHrUSg8Yc "One of the most enjoyable things about this album is that the heart of Free One is firmly rooted in friends and family. While its sound is unabashedly progressive, the band’s strong roots and fierce love of traditional music is clearly expressed. This fearless exploration often takes unconventional routes but never wanders off track as this powerhouse of a band takes Irish, Scottish, and Bluegrass by the hand and spins them into an album as unique and innovative as it is technically dazzling." - Folk Radio UK Featured in the fRoots ***** Playlist, September 2018 Reviews : |
