We asked Keith of Wee Studio Records the following questions.

Tell us about yourself
Wee Studio Records is an award-winning recording studio and label based in Ness on the Isle of Lewis. The most North Westerly studio in Europe. Established and directed by Keith Morrison, the studio has become a creative hub for musicians across the Highlands and Islands and beyond. Specialising in recording, mixing, and mastering, Wee Studio is known for its work with leading Scottish acts including Peat & Diesel, Face the West, Heron Valley, Jarad Rowan, and many of the country’s top Gaelic and traditional artists.

As one of Scotland’s most remote professional recording facilities, Wee Studio combines world-class equipment with the atmosphere of the Hebrides, a place where artists can escape, focus, and create. The studio is powered by solar energy during the brighter months and partners with Climate Hebrides to reduce travel through remote recording and virtual collaboration.

Beyond production, Wee Studio Records supports the local music community, offers mentorship, funding support, and professional development for emerging artists from across the islands.

Wee Studio Records stands out for its blend of professional excellence, cultural commitment, and environmental innovation, proudly representing the creative spirit of the Outer Hebrides on the national stage.

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I’m involved with Scottish music because it’s part of who I am and where I’m from. Growing up in the Outer Hebrides, traditional music, Gaelic song, and community gatherings were all around me. It’s the soundtrack to island life and a way of expressing our identity, language, and stories. My parents were musicians and I grew up playing instruments and getting dragged to trad sessions and music summer schools!

Through Wee Studio Records, I’ve tried to give that music the same professional standard and global reach as any major city studio, while keeping its heart rooted in the islands. I believe in supporting artists to develop their sound, record locally, and take pride in where they come from.

Scottish music has a unique power to connect people across generations and places, and I’m proud to play a part in recording, producing, and sharing it with the world.

Any particular career highlights?
Career highlights include working closely with Peat & Diesel, whose rise from local sessions in Stornoway to national success has helped shine a spotlight on island music and culture. I am a founding member of Face the West, a band that has been performing energetic modern ceilidh music across Scotland for many years. I also had the opportunity to perform in the United States with Heron Valley, helping bring Scottish traditional music to international audiences.

Another major milestone has been the creation of the new Wee Studio Records facility in Ness, a purpose-built solar-powered recording studio designed to give artists from the Hebrides and across Scotland access to world-class recording in a unique island setting.

Together, these experiences have been about more than just music. They have been about representing the spirit of the islands, growing opportunities for local musicians, and showing that world-class Scottish music can be made anywhere, even on the edge of the Atlantic.

What are your plans for the future?
The plan for Wee Studio Records is to continue developing as a creative hub for Scottish and Gaelic music, while expanding our reach nationally and internationally. We want to provide opportunities for artists from the islands and beyond to record, collaborate, and develop their careers in a professional yet relaxed setting that reflects the culture and landscape of the Hebrides.

In the coming years, we aim to build on our reputation by growing our remote mixing and mastering services, attracting new clients across Scotland and overseas. We will also continue producing and releasing music through the Wee Studio Records label, supporting artists in every stage of their journey from recording to release.

Sustainability remains central to our vision. We are working with Climate Hebrides to explore new ways of using renewable energy, remote collaboration, and digital tools to reduce travel and carbon emissions in the creative industries.

Above all, the future of Wee Studio Records is about supporting the next generation of Scottish musicians, celebrating Gaelic culture, and showing that world-class music can thrive in the most remote and inspiring parts of the country.
