We asked Malin of Malin Lewis the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Malin, I'm a piper, fiddler, composer and pipe-maker from the West Coast. I make music about nature, ecology, queerness and tradition. I tour with my wonderful band; Sally Simpson and Ali Hutton and this year has been the most exciting so far performing concerts and festivals across the UK and Europe.
As well as performing live with my band I compose and perform music for contemporary dance, radio and film including Tam O' Shanter for BBC Radio 4 and the BAFTA nominated score for The Outrun.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I love how the music makes me feel connected to the landscape. I think our traditional music is so raw and beautiful. I have always been fascinated by the sound of the pipes which is what led me to start playing and eventually start making them.
Any particular career highlights?
Every time I perform live I am so grateful to share my music and to feel connected to strangers through a shared love of music. Talking to people after concerts always makes these connections feel tangible and hearing people's stories about their experience of the music will always be a privilege.
What are your plans for the future?
Record album 2!
Perform at some new festivals across Europe!
Work on some new collaborations next year!
Swim in the sea and go camping more!
