We asked Ewen of Ewen Henderson the following questions.

Tell us about yourself
Ewen Henderson hails from Lochaber in the West Highlands of Scotland and has been steeped in the traditional music and Gaelic culture of the area from a young age. Ewen started learning the fiddle at five years of age and has since then mastered an impressive array of instruments, having had the privilege of learning from many of the true masters of West Highland traditional music – Aonghas Grant Snr. on fiddle most notably – whilst also coming under the influence of his family’s musical heritage.

Though most commonly found performing with Mànran (the band he co-founded in 2010), Ewen has also performed all over the world with a host of top Scottish and global cross-genre artists including the world-renowned Battlefield Band, with whom he toured for several years, and World Music pioneers the Afro-Celt Sound System.

When not touring and performing live, Ewen is in demand as a session musician, has composed soundtracks for film and television, and has enjoyed working as the musical director of live concerts and television series. Ewen is also a regular host of BBC Radio Scotland’s Piping Sounds and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal’s Crunluath programmes.

Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Because I love it.

Any particular career highlights?
Playing Carnegie Hall earlier this year, and I once scored a goal at half-time during the Scottish Cup Final, dressed as a pineapple.

What are your plans for the future?
Making music with a new band, “Prasgan”, making more music with Mànran, and an ambitious, top-secret solo composing project.
