We asked Beth of bethmalc@googlemail.com the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
I am a songwriter, piano player and singer of stories from Perth. I’ve been singing auld Scots songs since I was a very young girl. I took the leap of faith to quit my job as a high school teacher after the end of the pandemic, and have been performing for my job ever since. Last year, I released my album ‘FOLKMOSIS’, and it has changed my life. I perform it as a story, and it tells the tale of growing up around, rejecting, and then coming back to traditional music.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I was surrounded by folk music, and singing, since before I can remember. I learned most of my songs by ear, and linking up places to the songs from that area, became part of who I am.
Any particular career highlights?
Singing with Niteworks for their farewell show at the 02 ABC in Glasgow was a real highlight. Winning Scots Singer of the Year in 2022 and 2024 changed my working life.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently scoping out new music for album 3, and have started work on my next folk story album.
