We asked Ian Ruari of Skye Youth Pipe Band the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
The band play at various events throughout the year from Highland Games to various community events lead by Pipe Major Ian Ruari Finlayson and drumming tutor, Hugh MacCallum.
The band is growing in numbers with pupils learning pipes or drums in the islands primary schools and Portree High School.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
To continue the advancement of heritage and culture through the encouragement and promotion of Highland bagpipes and drumming for young people in Skye and the community.
Any particular career highlights?
Winning the Novice Juvenile B category at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championship in 2023
What are your plans for the future?
To keep the band going by developing new members as we lose the older ones. We are hoping to head to Kilmarnock in March 2025 for the Scottish Schools Pipe Bamd Championship. And maybe the possibility of heading out to Italy at the end of next summer as we went this year and it was the best trip the band has ever had.
