We asked Charlie of Session A9 the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Session A9 released their CD “The Magic Roundabout” in their 21st year as a band. The line-up features the fiddles of Charlie Mckerron, Gordon Gunn, Adam Sutherland and Kevin Henderson with Brian Mcalpine on piano, Marc Clement on guitar and vocals and David “Chimp” Robertson on percussion. Session A9 have earned their reputation as one of the best live bands in the country, adored by fellow artists and the wider public alike. Session A9 were formed through informal music sessions up and down the A9 and are frequently described as a “Scottish Supergroup”.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
We have all been involved in the Scottish music scene with different bands throughout our careers. We came together through sessions and the craic of playing tunes, the rest is, as they say, history. We are delighted to be part of Scotland’s thriving music scene with only a few gigs a year and the fact that people are listening to our recordings and enjoying them inspires us to keep going.
Any particular career highlights?
Despite our limited touring schedule over the years we have had many highlights including the live DVD recording at Celtic Connections and our trip to New York during The Ryder Cup. Glastonbury was some craic. We are always delighted to perform at Festivals throughout Scotland, Ireland and England as well as Europe, these are always highlights for us. Any gig from a village hall to a stadium is a joy. Keep music live.
What are your plans for the future?
We will be touring in April 2025 and we will hopefully manage a few more gigs throughout the year. We hope to include festivals this coming year where possible, the first of those confirmed is Speyfest. Who knows what else the future might bring to Session A9, we aim to still keeping bringing live music and recordings to our audiences everywhere until we drop.
