We asked Scott of S M Lighting (Scotlsand) Ltd the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
S M Lighting was set up in 1988 to supply lighting for mainly Tonight At Noon.
With the support & foresight of the enthusiastic late Davey Steel, we went on to light Ceolbeg and Clan Alba, (at a time when lighting was considered a luxury most bands could not afford) along with others such as Wolfstone in their early years.
Along with our annual trips for Melrose folk Festival, Glen Uig commity hall fundraiser festivals, Heb Celt Festival, Tiree Music Festival, Oban Live, amoungst others we became well established within the folk scene.
The rave dance scene came along in the 90s and saw us drift away from the folk scene.
The company has quietly grown over the last 36 years, and supplies the concert lighting for many of the concert events in Scotland.
It has seen a return to the folk music scene over the last few years, as budgets have improved and bands have realised the importance of lighting to their musical presentation, and also with the increase of lighting designers wanting to work within the Trad genre.
We are now regularly supply directly a number of trad bands such Tide Lines, Elephant Sessions, along with larger events as Hoolie at the Hydro and Celtic Connections.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Scott Munro (Director) had a family background of pipers from Grantown. He himself was a very poor fiddler.
Trad music has always been part of his life.
Any particular career highlights?
The brief few years of Clan Alba's existance was a wonderful time and the first tentitive steps towards bringing Trad music to a mass audience.
What are your plans for the future?
Continue to quietly grow, and do what we know we do well, which is giving each job our full attention.
