We asked Ross of Ross Cathcart the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
I’ve been working as a Live Sound Engineer in Scotland for over 10 years. I began my career as a Venue Technician at The Arches and have since worked for The Art School, the O2 ABC/O2 Academy and SWG3 in the same capacity. However, it was the meeting of Dave Town from Blackbox Pro Audio many years ago which gave me my introduction to the Traditional Folk scene in Scotland where the vast majority of my work now takes place in as a Front of House Engineer. A selection of acts I work with regularly include: Imar, Rura, Talisk, Project Smok, Mec Lir, Elephant Sessions, Manran and Shooglenifty.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Ultimately I’ve chosen to specialise in Traditional Folk music because out of all the genres I’ve mixed over the years, I’ve not found as much joy or the same sense of reward as I do working in Scottish music. It’s a genre which has a worldwide fan base and it’s great to be able to play a part in bringing it to those audiences.
Any particular career highlights?
A definite highlight of the past year was mixing Front of House for the Valtos and Friends show at SWG3 as part of Celtic Connections 2024. The performance took several months of planning as almost every song had a different guest act so there was a lot of moving parts but thanks to a solid effort from everyone involved it took place flawlessly.
What are your plans for the future?
Simply to continue playing my part in representing Scottish music and culture in all its forms to those who share the same appreciation for it.
