We asked Katie of Katie Macfarlane the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Gaelic singer from Airdrie, and have been drawn to traditional music my entire life. In October 2023 I released my debut album – An Nighean Sheunta / The Enchanted Girl – which combines Gaelic and Catalan styles, adopted from my ancestral connections to the Outer Hebrides and time spent studying in Barcelona.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Scottish music has always played an integral part in my upbringing along with my family connection to North Uist, where I first learned to sing in Gaelic at Fèis Tìr an Eòrna. From then on it was my dream to sing and work in Gaelic and my grandfather being a native Gaelic speaker was a huge inspiration when it came to pursuing this.
Any particular career highlights?
My career highlights would include being a semi-finalist in BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician and Radio 2 Young Folk Award, performing at festivals such as Celtic Connections and HebCelt, and recording and releasing my debut album.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to release more music and to play at more festivals across the country. I would love to tour abroad too as music can always take you to interesting places.
