We asked Josie of Josie Duncan the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Josie Duncan, and I’m a folk singer and songwriter from Stornoway. I graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2017 with a degree in Scots and Gaelic song, and I've been working full-time in music ever since.
My solo career has allowed me to travel the globe, and I feel incredibly fortunate to collaborate with inspiring projects, including Kathryn Tickell and The Darkening, An Dannsa Dub, and INYAL. Additionally, I’ve been involved in exciting theatre and film work, enriching my folky artistic journey, which has been a lot of fun.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I have been immersed in Scottish music my entire life, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have grown up in a community that nurtured this passion from a young age. This encouragement played a vital role in instilling a lifelong love for our music and culture within me.
Any particular career highlights?
I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel the world with my music. This year alone, I've performed in Canada, Austria, France, and various locations across the UK. A particularly special highlight was bringing Gaelic song to Glastonbury alongside An Dannsa Dub, a moment that truly resonated with me
What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently in the process of writing my second album, and I can't wait to share it with everyone! Looking ahead, I’m excited about participating in some fantastic festivals next year, both in Scotland and internationally. Additionally, I’m working on commissioned projects, creating music for films, which I'm incredibly passionate about and hope to explore further. I genuinely love what I do, and my goal is to continue making music and connecting with audiences for many years to come.
