We asked James of James Ross the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a pianist and composer from Caithness, now based in Glasgow. Collaboration has been, and continues to be, an important part of my work as both a composer and performer. I love working across genres and art forms with musicians, ensembles, authors, and artists to create new work.
I have worked with some amazing ensembles like Mr McFall’s Chamber, The Wallace Collection, and the Maxwell Quartet. I've also recorded with musicians such as Lauren MacColl, Su-a Lee, Ryan Young and singers Michelle Burke and Kathleen MacInnes. I frequently collaborate with writers and have created new projects with authors Alexander McCall Smith and James Robertson.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
I was really lucky to have been taught by Addie Harper when I was younger. His lessons were incredibly inspiring and definitely sparked my love for Scottish traditional music.
Any particular career highlights?
A career highlight for me is releasing my latest album, Landscape to Light, which features my own compositions inspired by the landscape of the north of Scotland. It’s a collection of piano and string quartet pieces, performed by the Maxwell Quartet and produced by Calum Malcolm.
What are your plans for the future?
I’ve got a few exciting composition projects lined up for 2025!
