We asked Joseph of Charlie Grey and Joseph Peach the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
We've been playing music together for around ten years now, first meeting when we were both students at Sgoil Chiùil Na Gàidhealtachd up in Plockton.
We released our first album – Waves Rise From Quiet Water back in 2016. That same year we were finalists in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, and the album was shortlisted for FATEA magazine's album of the year.
A number of releases followed: Air Iomall in 2019, a live album in 2020, Spiorachas – A High Place in 2021 and A Breaking Sky in 2024.
Our collaboration has deepened and grown over that time, with a shared sense of improvisation, spontaneity and freedom coming to the fore in our music making. Charlie's acquisition of a hardanger d'amore in 2020 added an entirely new dimension to the music.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
We've both been very lucky to be surrounded by traditional music since childhood, in both our families and respective communities – Charlie grew up in Fort Augustus, and Joe in Achiltibuie.
Any particular career highlights?
We've been extremely lucky in the opportunities we've received over the time we've been making music together. A huge highlight was our Air Iomall project. Air Iomall is a film and suite of music, written on a voyage aboard the tall ship Wylde Swan to some now uninhabited islands deep in the North Atlantic, some of Scotland’s most remote, and remarkable places. We gave the first performance of it at Australia's National Celtic Festival, and the film was subsequently broadcast on BBC Alba.
What are your plans for the future?
We've been getting increasingly involved in production music, collaborating with a number of brands, productions and music libraries. We've got a couple of quite exciting projects coming up, which we're looking forward to getting stuck in to!
