We asked Laura-Beth of Ali Hutton & Laura-Beth Salter the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
From the Ground brings together mandolin player and singer Laura-Beth Salter (Kinnaris Quintet, The Shee) and piper, guitarist, and whistle player Ali Hutton (Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton, Treacherous Orchestra). Their first, self titled album consists of nine new compositions with a powerful message at its core. The music, whilst delving into new territories, highlights Ali and LB's individual trad musical backgrounds.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
We have both been working in the Scottish trad music scene for years, and love its vibrancy, diversity and willingness to experiment whilst rooted in such strong traditions. We are lucky to be part of a scene that has grown together and been well supported by those who came before us.
Any particular career highlights?
Laura-Beth says winning the Belhaven Award for Innovation with Kinnaris Quintet was a huge career highlight, as was touring American with Finnish band Frigg and getting to gig at all of her favourite Scottish festivals. Playing mandolin and singing BVs for Dougie MacLean while he sang Caledonia with a packed main stage crowd at HebCelt was awe inspiring.
Ali says playing The Radio 2 festival at Hyde Park with Treacherous Orchestra and the Christian Dior Fashion Show after party with Tryst!
And ofcourse, for both of us, finishing this album! We had the idea to develop a sound/write together about 7 years ago now, and its taken a lot of experimenting, writing, arranging and time to get to where we want to be.
What are your plans for the future?
We will be premiering the live From The Ground gig at Celtic Connections this January, and then plan to tour and write more new music
