We asked Robbie Fraser of The Hamish Film Premiere at Glasgow Film Festival the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Hamish was produced by Bees Nees Media in association with Pure Magic Films for BBC ALBA and Creative Scotland. It was produced by Alasdair MacCuish, directed by Robbie Fraser and written by Kevin MacNeil, with associate producer Douglas Eadie. The production was a labour of love for all concerned, and made with invaluable contributions from Timothy Neat, Dolina Maclennan and above all the family of Hamish Henderson: Kätzel, Janet and Tina. The film was released in cinemas in the summer of 2016 after a magical, musical premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in collaboration with Celtic Connections.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Traditional music is the carrying stream – as Hamish Henderson would have said – which informs us and bears us along as filmmakers. Working with musicians and artists in Scottish traditional music is a key part of our work and always will be.
Any particular career highlights?
Hamish is Robbie Fraser's fourth feature film, and his third to premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival. He was nominated for Best TV Drama at BAFTA Scotland in 2009, and his documentary Tormod, about Norman Maclean, won the Jury Award at the Celtic Media Festival in 2010.
What are your plans for the future?
Alasdair MacCuish, Robbie Fraser and Douglas Eadie have continued their collaboration with a special film for Aly Bain's 70th birthday year for BBC Scotland, and are looking forward to telling more stories from the world of trad!
