We asked Ian Anderson of fRoots Magazine the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Now in its 38th year and having passed its 400th issue in 2016 (every one published on time!), fRoots continues to be the leading magazine covering modern and traditional folk and roots music from around the globe, always at the sharp end of the folk/roots/world music scene. fRoots deals with an incredible diversity of music from the very ethnic to the latest fusions, centred on the UK but with a global view. Every hugely comprehensive issue is packed with features, news, reviews and original photography – the first place you'll read about new names who later go on to establish strong reputations, and often the first to highlight previously under-exposed local musics. It has always been strongly activist and engaged, promoting live events, catalysing collaborations, releasing albums and with a monthly internet radio show.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
Because it's a vibrant part of the UK's traditional music scene, so one of our important ingredients.
Any particular career highlights?
We were presented with the Womex Award for Professional Excellence in 2010.
What are your plans for the future?
40 years, 500 issues – who knows?!
