Friday 8th August is the start of an eight-date double bill tour two of Scotland’s most dynamic composers Celtic Connections New Voices Commissions. The tour supported by Creative Scotland will revisit Angus Lyon’s ‘3G’ and Duncan Lyall’s ‘Infinite Reflections’ taking them to new audiences starting on the 8th August in An Tobar before hitting the mainland at Glasgow’s CCA on the 9th.
’3G’ and ‘Infinite Reflections’ have been performed at Celtic Connections Festival, firstly as premiers in 2011 and 2012 respectively, and then as a special double bill in 2013 which also seen the launch of their recordings. The New Voices programme provides emerging composers with the opportunity to develop and showcase their new music.
Angus and Duncan are joined by a stellar line up featuring seven top Scottish musicians – Ali Hutton, Innes Watson, Chas MacKenzie, Alyn Cosker, Patsy Reid, Iain Sandilands and Fraser Fifield. The ambitious project will visit 7 venues across Scotland and St Pancras Old Church in London for the first time.
Duncan Lyall explains,
“This tour sees us teaming up with the same band using the same musicians on both pieces, so we’ve made a few alterations to the music to suit the musicians we are working with. So it is going to be a bit of adventure musically as well as on the road.”
The tour starts at An Tobar, Isle of Mull on the 8th August before heading to the CCA Glasgow on the 9th August. There is a bit of a break before launching into some interesting journeys between the 3rd and 10th September starting on 3rd at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline; 4th Sept Roxy in Edinburgh; 5th Sept, Plockton High School; 6th Sept Lyth Arts Centre, Wick; 7th Sept the Gardyne Theatre, Dundee; before concluding at the St Pancras Old Parish Church in London on the 10th September.
This project is being supported and coordinated by Glow Arts a Glasgow based arts company that project manages a variety of programmes to support arts and provide access to high quality arts events. Jennifer McGlone, Manager says.
“The idea behind the tour was to take these new works to audiences that had not had the opportunity to experience them live as they had only been performed in Glasgow during the festival. Due to the size of the ensembles and the composers diaries it would have been difficult for them to achieve this without support from Creative Scotland”.
This is a one-off special tour that shouldn’t be missed.

‘3G’ – Angus Lyon – This new instrumental triptych 3G evokes the overlapping experiences of three generations, from grandfather to grandson, exploring the cyclical interplay of tradition and modernity. “The idea behind this music was to explore the notion that a lot of who you are comes from those who went before you. Like each generation of a family, these three parts of music have their own individual voices and ideas but are ultimately influenced by what’s happened before. So much has changed in the space of only a few generations and I wanted the music to represent that transition in the style and attitude of the different parts”
