Any more information you would like to tell us? | Drawn From Deep Water is the new album from Scottish acoustic four-piece Gnoss (Scots Trad Awards ‘Up and Coming’ Nominees 2018). A combination of voice, fiddle, flute, whistle, bodhran, and acoustic guitar, this 11-track album of primarily self-penned material cements the progressive sound the boys developed through a year of live shows: a distinctly forward-thinking take on a tried-and-tested folk band formula. The album sets out to sit firmly on the contemporary side of the folk spectrum with songs and tunes from a wide range of sources; Fair-Isle songwriter Lise Sinclair, Nova Scotian singer David Francey, the poetry of Orcadian George Mackay Brown, Swedish folk band Vassen and of course the boys’ own musical output. Over 70% of the album is self-penned with tunes from Graham and Connor and two examples of Aidan’s songwriting. Gnoss’ current lineup took form in 2017 with the release of introductory EP ‘Brother Wind’ - a four track taster which received national airplay (BBC Radio 2 The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal) and was toured throughout Scotland and Denmark, with further festival appearances in France (Festival Interceltique de Lorient), England and Wales. Before this, Gnoss won a Danny Kyle award at Celtic Connections 2015 as a duo, released a self-titled album, and gigged throughout the UK including appearances at festivals such as Folk By The Oak, Gate to Southwell, The Orkney Folk Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Drawn From Deep Water also features singers Kim Carnie - tracks 4 and 10 - and Zoe Bestel - tracks 7 and 10 - as well as bassist James Lindsay (Breabach) who plays throughout. It was recorded by Gus Stirrat (Fat Suit) at Solas Sounds in Glasgow, produced by Ross Ainslie (Treacherous Orchestra, Ross and Ali) and mastered by Michael Fossenkemper at Turtletone Studios in New York. The cover art is a collaborative work between painter Orla Stevens and photographer Martin Venherm. |
