The 2026 Scots Language Awards tak place on Saturday 19th September at the iconic Discovery Centre, home of the RRS Discovery Ship (1pm). Reserve yer ticket here.
The awards will be a daytime event this year, making them as inclusive and accessible to as many award nominees from across Scotland as possible.

Am Kari! Am a writer fae Bonnyrigg (Boomtoon) now living in London. A run Sláinte! Theatre – a Scottish and Irish theatre company set up tae promote Celtic work doon sooth. A trained as an actor initially, efter started the theatre company I wis mare drawn tae writing, and went back tae study at Central School of Speech in drama – I write predominantly in colloquial scots fur theatre and tv, tae my lecturers distane, who fur the maste part telt me to write in “English” and that actors could “just do the accent”.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
I didny even realise I wis! The language is just sae embedded inty the culture, and where a grew up, that a nevir considered it as a separate way eh speaking. Tae me it’s second nature. I hink it's beautiful the way the language has carried ower and that sayings dinny need tae be taught, we just ken them instinctively. This way o speaking carried ower intae ma writing, and a couldny magine writing in another way. A also hink being London based a carry a sense of pride in the way a speak and write and use my voice to carry and amplify the scots language.
Why dae ye feel it is important tae use Scots in everyday life?
Dae ye hae a favourite Scots phrase or saying?
“Haud yer wheest” is fantastic but ma fav is “Pan Breid.”
Is there a Scots speaker who inspires you?
Irvine Welsh and the way he writes has been a huge inspiration tae ma work. He writes in a very similar way which ad describe as a more modern blended approach tae the language, showin how the language lives oan in the 21st century.
A also wid say Common Tongue by Fraser Scott has been a highlight oaf ma fringe this year.
Do you hear Scots spoken regularly in your local area? Have you noticed any changes over time?
Ony particlar career heighlichts
Definitely Fringe! Being up here and receiving the reception oan the play a have has been fantastic. It’s dain really well and am sae proud oaf the team fir pulling it aff. The best part of this has definitely been the audiences and the way they’ve received the work and knowing it’s had a significant impact on them. It’s an important but funny story about universal issues, but set in ma hametown, bringing bonnyrigg tae an international stage.
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
HAVE FUN. ave been running aboot edinburgh these past few weeks maniacly, so ave decided am gonny enjoy the rest of fringe, lap up as much as a can before a heid back doon sooth. A feel like the fringe is such a strange combination of being in the place a grew up and being in the theatre world am now in – its wonderful, but can be overwhelming at times! A will be making it intae that Sauna at Summerhall at some point as am very intrigued by it.
