Keith TMSA Festival wis first held on 11th – 13th June 1976 unner the chairmanship o the legendary Jim Reid. Since then the very best traditional musicians and singers in the country hiv bin entertainin in venues ah ower the toun. It's a fantastic weekeyne o traditional music, sang, duncin and verse wi concerts, dunces, sessions, sing-a-roons an a great screed o competitions for adults and bairns.
Whit wis it got ye involvit wi the Scots leid?
Doric is the mither tongue o Keith an the surroundin area and fit better wye tae celebrate, promote and preserve it than throu a Festival o music an sang. Oor competitions are key tae that as it gees young and auld fowk alike the chunce tae tak pairt and use their language in a mair formal settin. It also gees fowk the chunce tae come the gither and enjoy a tune, a sang or a poem – fit cwid be better?!
Ony particlar career heighlichts
There's been as mony heighlichts ower the last 47 year but some include oor Silver Jubilee festival in 2000, welcomin a choir fae Montenegro tae sing for oor 30th anniversary, oor 40th anniversary wi Blazin Fiddles an oor first Festival back efter covid. It's bin a privilege for us tae hear fae some o the best Scots tradition bearers in the land – fowk like Tam Reid, Joe Aitken, Sheena Wellington, Ian Middleton, Doris Rougvie, Foundry Bar Band, Robbie Shepherd and Jim Reid (as weel as mony, mony ithers). But also seeing some o the wunnerful talent that's grown up performin at the Festival. Fowk like Graeme Mitchell, Scott Gardiner, Shona Donaldson, Amy Papiransky and Paul Anderson tae name jist a puckle. Also, helpin tae get Keith the accolade o bein the first Scots Toun wis braw!
Wha’s yer plans fir the days aheid?
We're afa keen tae keep encouragin fowk o ah ages tae write and spik in Scots an we'll keep deein that throu oor written and performance competitions. We're lookin forrit tae oor neist Festival on the weekeyne o 9th – 11th June 2023 which we're in the plannin o the noo. We canna wait tae bring mair traditional music and sang tae audiences and tae share the joy o the Scots language wi ithers.
