We asked Peter West of Skerryvore the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Skerryvore are a 7 piece folk rock ensemble, originally formed on the Isle of Tiree. The band tour extensively throughout Scotland, across Europe and North America, and in the Middle and Far East. Their vibrant, live set is typically seen as ‘a party waiting to happen!’
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
The band’s roots are firmly established in the West Coast ceilidh tradition. From this beginning the band have developed their musical style, introducing a variety of world influences. However their instrumentation, including pipes, whistles, fiddles and accordion, along with guitar, bass and keyboards, means their sound is distinctively ‘Scottish.’ The band are proudly Scottish, and they have been described as ‘(some) of the best musical ambassadors Scotland could ever have wished for…’
Any particular career highlights?
2008 – performing as ‘Scottish Ambassadors’ at the Ryder Cup in Louisville, Kentucky.
2009 – Becoming PSYBT Young Entrepreneurs of the year
2010 – Release of the award winning ‘Skerryvore’ album
2011 – Performing at Tartan Day Parade, New York
2012 – Performing at Milwaukee Irish Fest
2013 – Shetland Folk Festival
2014 – Release of ‘Chasing the Sun’ and performing at the 40th Anniversary Tonder Festival, Denmark
What are your plans for the future?
2015 is Skerryvore’s 10th birthday. Plans are well advanced for a ‘Special’ Scottish performance!
Skerryvore will continue to tour and perform extensively, and continue to produce new ‘Scottish’ music.
