We asked Scott Wood the following questions.
Tell us about yourself
Bursting on to the Scottish Music scene at the 2014 Celtic Connections Festival Club, the Scott Wood Band have came on leaps and bounds throughout the year, performing at many festivals throughout Scotland. Their bagpipe-driven, cross genre sound has gained them a reputation as being one of Scotland’s top young folk acts.
The band was developed from the critically acclaimed Scott Wood Trio, who were nominated for ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards in 2013. The trio performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe in 2013, with highlights including Tiree Music Festival, Piping Live, Scots Fiddle Festival and Speyfest.
The line-up consists of:
Scott Wood – Bagpipes/Whistles
Mhairi Mackinnon – Fiddle
Ron Jappy – Guitar
Angus Tikka – Bass
Mark Scobbie – Drums
The band contains a BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Finalist, as well as a BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Finalist, and collectively they have toured with bands such as: Mànran, Old Blind Dogs, Wolfstone, Skerryvore, Rura, Fat-Suit and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. All graduates of Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the University of Strathclyde, they have individually performed shows in every continent on the globe . . . apart from Antarctica.
Why are you involved in Scottish music?
We are all involved in Scottish Music purely down to our own individual passion for the music. It’s the music we all listen to and love, and it makes writing and arranging music together really enjoyable. Although we’re trying to incorporate influences from different genres to take pipe music to a different place, we will never forget our firm traditional rooting in the music.
Any particular career highlights?
Having only formed in 2014 as the ‘Scott Wood Band’, we have not had a lot of time to tour extensively. However, performing at the amazing HebCelt festival was definitely one of our highlights as band. We were nominated for ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the 2013 MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards as the ‘Scott Wood Trio’, and one year (and a lot of hard work) later, we feel humbled and honoured to be nominated in another prestigious category.
What are your plans for the future?
In February 2015, we are set to make our debut album with producer Calum MacCrimmon. The record has been a long time in the making, and we’re excited to tape down this moment in our creative journeys. Once it’s all done, we plan to tour the album extensively over the year throughout the UK and Europe, and then we’ll see where it will all take us!
